Summer Safety

Healthy Tips

With the weather warming up and summer right around the corner, it’s important to be prepared while doing any outdoor activity. Having a dedicated “adventure bag” filled with items you may need in a pinch is one of the best ways to ensure a safe and fun summer outing. Start by picking a bag that is durable and easy to carry; a backpack may be best. Then, fill it with adventure essentials. Here is a list of what we recommend:

A sunburn can occur with less than 15 minutes of sun exposure. Keep an SPF 30 stashed in your bag for protection anytime you venture out.

Bug Spray

Nothing ruins a day of summer fun faster than itchy bug bites. Bug spray helps to keep bugs away while protecting your family from bug borne illnesses.

It’s important to stay hydrated. Leave the sugary drinks at home and opt for water in a reusable bottle. It is good for you and the environment.

Healthy Snacks

You never know when the pangs of hunger might hit you. Packing healthy snacks like carrots, fruit, granola bars and trailmix are a great way to stay nourished.

First Aid Kit

Tumbles, scrapes and cuts are not unlikely when you are out exploring Sitka. Having a first aid kit stocked with bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment and a blister kit can come in handy.

With your well stocked “adventure bag”, you are sure to have a fun and safe summer season. Should you need care from a healthcare professional, Sitka Community Hospital is here and can treat any minor illness or injury at the Mountainside Family Healthcare Walk-in Clinic.
